The three federations: who wants Dawn, and why

Spoiler-light guide to Moreth, Ashton, and Strath in Star Map Draftsman: Star Bridges, White Crystal, two princes at war. Free, complete, by Mango Taoist.

When Dawn Lucius leaves Earth, he does not walk into an empty galaxy. He walks into an argument. Three federations — Moreth, Ashton, and Strath — have been contesting the Orion Arm long before a Level Zero engineer from 2059 shows up as a new Star Map Draftsman.

You do not need to memorize them before chapter 1. But if names start piling up around the middle of Book I, this is the short version.

Moreth: the bridge builders

Moreth's edge is the Star Bridge — technology invented by the Centaly people inside Moreth. Bridges move ships fast across the arm, but they cannot carry troop-bearing ships. Warships stay outside. That one rule is a peace safeguard for the whole Orion Arm, and a lot of Book I's tension comes from people testing it.

Moreth's capital system, its gravity wells, and Jonathan Moreth Steader's politics frame the mid-war arc. See Moreth Federation.

Ashton: White Crystal and the Winifreds

Ashton is spread across specialized worlds, with its Interior Sector on Visadio and its Defense Sector on Cavnos. It mastered White Crystal through earlier Draftsman arrangements, and Madam Winifred and Lord Winifred dominate its politics. Its allies lean on that crystal access. If Ashton falls, they may fold.

This is where White Crystal as governance stops being an idea and becomes a seating chart. See Ashton Federation.

Strath: two princes, one chair

Strath is about to choose a new chief, and two princes — Burt and Carlson — want the seat. Their rivalry spills outward. Burt seizes a pirate ship and drives toward Gyaly under a liberation banner. Carlson pushes fleets through Moreth toward Ashton. A succession fight becomes everyone's war. See Strath Federation.

Why a father from Earth is in the middle

The Datheon chose Dawn, and dark matter gathers around a Draftsman. Every federation wants him: who can use him, who can snatch him, who will pay in long life. Dawn wants none of their thrones. He wants to get home to his son, Stacean. That gap between galactic leverage and one man's errand is what the series is about.

Where to start

Read free from Book I chapter 1: From Earth. The federations take the stage in Federation War and come back in Fate of the Galaxy. For a one-page summary, open Three Federations. For worlds and ships, browse Places or the explore-only Star Atlas. Spoilers are labeled there.

One sentence

Moreth builds the bridges, Ashton holds the crystal, Strath's princes want the chair, and Dawn just wants to go home. Start at From Earth.
